Update 2011 December: Check out solution with Custom Scrolling in Firefox here (video)
UPDATE 2011 August: For scrolling issues/problems with Snagit 10.01 and firefox see the last comments for a solution.
Snagit is the Best Screen Capture software – I can confidently say no doubt about it. There’s a cliche that goes, “Nobody’s Perfect.” Well nobody doesn’t necessarily have to be a person, it can also be applied to things and animals. ‘Nothing is Perfect’ well with one exception SNAGIT IS PERFECT
Today I am sharing one common issue that some Snagit Fans may have experienced and thought there was no solution. You get a nice long article that you want to capture and print but oh no! Snagit Scroll Feature won’t work! Relax am here to help you sort this one out.
First of all if you are still using Snagit version 7 or 8 you should think about upgrading. Lots of the little nagging issues in previous versions of Snagit have been resolved in Snagit 9. I think Snagit 9 upgrade is well worth it
To use the Auto-Scroll Capture feature correctly you need to adjust some settings. Follow the instructions below:
For Snagit Version 8 or 9

IMAGE
1. Select Input
2. Go to Properties
3. Click on Scrolling tab
4. Set the Scroll delay to “0″ miliseconds.
5. Set the Scroll direction to “Both”
6. Click Apply, then OK
7. Select Input > Scrolling > Auto Scroll Window
8. Open the program you want to scroll.
9. Click on the Capture hotkey or open SnagIt and click the Red Capture button to start.
10. Once you see the hand-cursor, click on the middle of the window that you want to scroll and wait for a few moments for it to scroll and make the capture.
I recommend you use the Custom Scroll Window function because the settings of Auto-Scroll Window will not work properly due to the non-standard scrollbars that redraws during scrolling.
To use Custom Scroll, do the following:
1. Select Input
2. Go to Scrolling
3. Choose Custom Scroll
4. Open the program that you want to capture
5. Click the Capture hotkey
5. Once you see the crosshair scroll that allows you to drag your desired region then click on the down arrow control with the left mouse button to begin the capture.
For windows that is scrolled horizontally, I recommend you use the Extended Window input, most especially if you are using XP. To set Extended Window, do the following:
1. Select Input
2. Go to Advanced
3. Choose Extended Window
If you are unable to scroll, you can also change the Scroll delay value, to do so, follow this:
1. Select Input
2. Go to Properties
3. Click on Scrolling Tab
4. Set the Scroll delay to 300, then 500, then 1000 to see whichever allows you to create a successful capture.
If you continue to have problems performing your auto scroll captures contact our support team for assistance.
That’s all there is to it. I hope this has been helpful to you.

Hello all,
first of all, thanks to Peter for this nice site! I will go deeper later… and get my 20 stamps collection free
Well, I can see that everyone gets a particular behavior from SnagIt 9 or 10 and of course I got my own! As I have SnagIt 10 working fine for both FF5 and IE8, following details may help.
Well, here’s my story, as brief as possible:
– my initial environment: XP, IE8, SnagIt 9.1.3 : everything OK!
– I noticed that IE8 was sucking my RAM but IE9 was not a possible upgrade above XP => use of FF Portable 5.0 since 2 weeks (FF 5.1 is just different for Mac users)
– SnagIt 9 FF extension (version 1.2.3) did not offer scrolling capture
– I upgraded to version 1.0.0.1 yesterday (trial version, build 58 at March 21, 2011) and as a kind of magic, any type of scrolling capture did work in FF 5!
– I discovered today that auto-scrolling capture would not work anymore in IE8 (I still use it few times) but manual scrolling would still work => thanks to TechSmith French KB, I just upgraded to 1.0.0.1 build 68 (May 16, 2011=> @Peter & Adrian: please note this newer build!
– as this did not fix auto-scrolling capture in IE8, I carefully read some
of the tips provided in TechSmith French KB and I only applied this one: uncheck option “use fastest scrolling method” in Scrolling tab of the Input Properties dialog box
=> and now, ladies and gentlemen, I have the scrolling capture feature working fine in both browsers FF5 and IE8 under XP! with one little restriction: I have to use SnagIt main application to use this feature in IE8 as it would crash SnagIt when I launch it directly from IE8 SnagIt toolbar or from OneClick windows. I guess that these two launchers have their own settings and do not use settings defined in the main application; I don’t know what are the defaults settings for the toolbar and the OneClick windows does only use profiles => I have set up a specific profile for auto-scrolling capture in IE8 in OneClick and it works.
That all folks! I hope it could help some of you.
Cheers from France
PS: English and French KB from TechSmith have quite similar content but I could update with any relevant URL here in case it could provide more valuable information
Thanks Pierre, this was an excellent help.
After a few restarts of Snagit I also got problems with build 58 no longer wanting to scroll-capture with Firefox 5.01.
I updated Snagit to what I suspect the unofficial build 68 and after this step the scrolling now works again.
Please note that the new build doesn’t come as an installation file but must be manually pasted into the Snagit folder in the Program Files of your computer.
Snagit Update for build 68 can be downloaded here
The French post about this upgrade can be found here
Nice article about Snagit Scrolling……….
thanks…………
Build 68 was perfect. Thank you!
I’ve read all the comments and scoured help forums, but I cannot figure out how to make scrolling work with SnagIt 10.0.1 and Firefox 6.0.1. Please post any tips you have!
Never mind, I figured it out! Hadn’t installed build 68 correctly. Thanks, all!
my snagit ver. 10.0.0 (build 788)
my FireFox ver. 6.0.2
Snagit can not operate scrolling sreen capture,,
can you help me ?
Thanks
Hi Ray,
See the last comments. You have to upgrade your Snagit to the latest release to begin with.
Hello all,
I discussed a lot with American and French support teams from TechSmith… and with Peter too
It appears quite clear that TechSmith does not want to spend (waste?) time in making their Snagit toolbar or even main application working fine with last versions of Firefox. Mozilla community’s pace is too fast for TechSmith: version 4 in March, 5 in June and 6 in September. I did not check but I guess versions 7 and 8 official will be released very soon. While Snagit 10.0.0 showed up around September 2010 and we get 10.0.1 one year later…
Here a status about auto-scrolling feature with Firefox and IE8 (under Windows XP). In case of issue in your own environment, you should check for something conflicting (other add-ons?), missing or inappropriate (wrong setting?) somewhere. You may need to refer to former comments for details.
Here below is how it works on my laptop and you could get the same… or maybe better:
– work fine in FF5 and IE8 with build 68 (unchecking option “use fastest scrolling method” could help and you may have to use main application in IE8 due to crash when using toolbar or OneClick)
– reported as not compatible with FF6 and I did not try to check using Add-on Compatibility Reporter to confirm: I was so fed up with TechSmith attitude favoring Internet Explorer that I gave up, reverting to Snagit 9 (it does not work in FF6 but I had Snagit 10 as a trial)
– you may notice that auto-scrolling feature would only work in FF5 with already opened tabs, meaning it would fail with any newly opened or reopened tab in your current session => poor workaround: save current session with the tab open for the page you want to scroll and save, close then restart Firefox and save your page :/
– Snagit extension does not save URLs for captured Web pages so you cannot jump back online to the captured Web page from the Editor and that was definitely a show stopper for me. TechSmith is aware of that bug since several months but no fix is scheduled
I will keep on complaining at TechSmith, saying that I will upgrade when it will work fine with Firefox (having all issues above fixed).
Cheers from France
@Ray: TechSmith did not update SnagIt to make it working with Firefox 6.
You could check this:
– install version 10.0.1 build 68 on your system
– install Snagit extension for Firefox (xpi file); Firefox
– install Add-on Compatibility Checker module in Firefox 6 to make Snagit extension enable
– check if Snagit auto-scrolling feature works again
– please let Mozilla know by submitting a report from Add-on Compatibility Checker module (Compatibility button)
I just upgraded to 10.0.1.58 (the most recent as of today) and now Scrolling fails on my company’s web-based product. Other websites scroll properly.
Scrolling worked flawlessly until the upgrade. This is a serious problem.
I am on Win7 with IE8. I am setting up an All-in-One profile to save to JPG. When I click to start the capture, SnagIt starts to capture the window, but does not seem to recognize that it should scroll – I never get the scrolling option.
NOTE this is IE8, not Firefox.
Thanks for this – for some reason the scrolling just stopped working on my Snagit version 10 system. Following the above guide it working – not quite as I want it – but useable and it’s given me the hints to customise Snagit the way I want – when I have a bit more free time.
Thanks – I find the package really useful for writing tutorials.
Just unchecked “Use Fastest Method” and it worked! Thanks.
Hello,
I am using snagit 9 and unfortunately that fix did not work still wont scroll.Any other suggestions.
I’m using FF 7.01 and the latest Snag-it, and scrolling isn’t working, whether I use a specific scrolling window profile or the all-in-one profile (the round scroll button doesn’t even show up in the AIO profile).
It *seems* like it’s a focus issue, where snag-it no longer is able to recognize the different frames in a window (i.e. the red box that normally highlights just the browser content, or a toolbar, or the entire window, etc.)
Being a longtime code myself this seems like it should be an easy code tweak for the developers, however I’ve come to learn over the years of being a snag-it/techsmith products’ customer that the devs at Techsmith are slower than molasses in the tundra. I’m not sure if this is due to lack of sales, or caring about their product(s) or what, but it’s a shame since it’s the best out there.
Hi Geegdrop,
I understand where you are coming from as I have had the same problem but I also have total understanding for TechSmith. Firefox has started releasing updates in such a rapid succession that it must be impossible to follow this development.
I had problems with ff v6 but after version 7 was released it is now working without problems again. If I come across any particular website that is causing problems I open it in explorer instead and that should normally solve it.
I don’t think it’s that easy to follow the development and especially since firefox is changing how it has handled the scrolling all the times in the last updates. Until firefox is released in a more stable fashion I think it’s hard to solve this, but please note that I am a layman when it comes to this programming. Please also note that I am not a TechSmith employee and am not connected to their product development.
I agree that Snagit is the best out there, no question about that.
Happy Snagging
Peter
A workaround for Firefox that may work is to open your FF option (located under Tools), choose Advanced, and then under Browsing, untick “Use Autoscrolling” and “Use Smooth scrolling”. This worked well for me under Firefox version 7.
As of 11/15/11, latest version allows me to capture a scrolling window on Windows 7 64bit, Home Premium.
Hello, I`m getting weird problem with SnagIt scrolling window function. I click Capture, red borders appear on sides of window, I click left mouse button and it makes a normal screenshot like with “Window” profile. I tried to record how my problem looks like with Camtasia Studio, but then I get another bug – it says “Wrong input” when I try to capture web page with SnagIt.
I have been using Snagit for Macintosh and FF for years. FF always seems to break this application’s plug-in. I resisted upgrading FF for the longest time and finally decided I had to upgrade to FF 9 (9.01 to be precise on the MacOSX 10.7.x, aka Lion). Naturally, even though there is a plug-in for FF that works with Lion, the auto scrolling is broken and often crashes FF. The “Custom Scrolling” technique you created with TechSmith assistance, cannot be used on the Mac version of snagit. There is no custom scroll option and very few input options at all.
Any suggestions you can provide? BTW delay capture is a max of 10 seconds on the current snagit mac version.
Thanks for your excellent blog,
Steve
