Update Alternative Solution: Check out solution with Custom Scrolling in Firefox here (video)
UPDATE 2011 August: For scrolling issues/problems with Snagit 10.01 and firefox see the last comments for a solution.
Snagit is the Best Screen Capture software – I can confidently say no doubt about it. There’s a cliche that goes, “Nobody’s Perfect.” Well nobody doesn’t necessarily have to be a person, it can also be applied to things and animals. ‘Nothing is Perfect’ well with one exception SNAGIT IS PERFECT
Today I am sharing one common issue that some Snagit Fans may have experienced and thought there was no solution. You get a nice long article that you want to capture and print but oh no! Snagit Scroll Feature won’t work! Relax am here to help you sort this one out.
First of all if you are still using Snagit version 7 or 8 you should think about upgrading. Lots of the little nagging issues in previous versions of Snagit have been resolved in Snagit 9. I think Snagit 9 upgrade is well worth it
To use the Auto-Scroll Capture feature correctly you need to adjust some settings. Follow the instructions below:
For Snagit Version 8 or 9

IMAGE
1. Select Input
2. Go to Properties
3. Click on Scrolling tab
4. Set the Scroll delay to “0″ miliseconds.
5. Set the Scroll direction to “Both”
6. Click Apply, then OK
7. Select Input > Scrolling > Auto Scroll Window
8. Open the program you want to scroll.
9. Click on the Capture hotkey or open SnagIt and click the Red Capture button to start.
10. Once you see the hand-cursor, click on the middle of the window that you want to scroll and wait for a few moments for it to scroll and make the capture.
I recommend you use the Custom Scroll Window function because the settings of Auto-Scroll Window will not work properly due to the non-standard scrollbars that redraws during scrolling.
To use Custom Scroll, do the following:
1. Select Input
2. Go to Scrolling
3. Choose Custom Scroll
4. Open the program that you want to capture
5. Click the Capture hotkey
5. Once you see the crosshair scroll that allows you to drag your desired region then click on the down arrow control with the left mouse button to begin the capture.
For windows that is scrolled horizontally, I recommend you use the Extended Window input, most especially if you are using XP. To set Extended Window, do the following:
1. Select Input
2. Go to Advanced
3. Choose Extended Window
If you are unable to scroll, you can also change the Scroll delay value, to do so, follow this:
1. Select Input
2. Go to Properties
3. Click on Scrolling Tab
4. Set the Scroll delay to 300, then 500, then 1000 to see whichever allows you to create a successful capture.
If you continue to have problems performing your auto scroll captures contact our support team for assistance.
That’s all there is to it. I hope this has been helpful to you.

Well done on the solution. This one has been annoying me (a little) for a while now.
SnagIt needs a complete overhaul, because I still ask myself every time I try to use SnagIt: “Is there something what do works on SnagIt”? I still hope that at some point Software casa gets some input from outer space to get it done.
I did what you had suggested, however it still doesn’t not work :O( And by the way, I have the latest version of Snagit(9th).
Thank you so much !!!!! It worked!!
This feature is great when it works. I never have gotten it to work properly on a very long webpage. In these instances SnagIt either failed completely or it would leave out sections of the page. I have a X4 processor and 6 GB RAM so it’s not a hardware issue. Other screen capture programs I have used can capture the entire page.
Now I have just reinstalled Windows 7 and SnagIt 9.1.3 and the scrolling window feature doesn’t work at all. I tried the fixes suggested in this article, but to no avail.
SnagIt is a good program but it still needs work to be great.
Same issue as above, I’m running Windows 7 Ultimate with the Snagit 9.1.3 build, and still no luck with the scroll feature.
When do you think TechSmith will have a fix for this?
I’m having the exact same issue with Snagit on two separate Windows 7 installs (Ultimate & Professional). One of the Snagit versions is 9.1.3 and the other is 9.1.2. I tried the suggestions in this article on both machines but the scrolling capture feature still doesn’t work.
If you are using firefox the problem is probably version 3.6. Down grading to FireFox 3.5.8 fixes the problem.
If you’re using firefox, I think it’s the one causing the problem. I can’t get the scrolling window to function in firefox, but it scrolls when I’m using IE. I haven’t tried it with other browsers though.
I couldn’t get it to work in Windows 7 + Firefox 3.6 but it works in Windows 7 + IE 8.
So the problem is Firefox. Hoping there is a fix soon.
The scrolling feature always worked in Win XP, but since I upgraded to Win 7 it has stopped working. Firefox version independent.
Please issue a fix for the scrolling feature. I use it quite often.
Yes, I think I have identified the problem. It’s affecting firefox 3.6 specifically, but not previous versions. So if you desperately need the scrolling functionality downgrade FF to version 3.5.8 instead.
Peter
Good thinking on the Firefox 3.6 problem…that was it.
Thanks !
I have the same issue w/ my upgrade to 9.1.3. I used the scrolling feature with Firefox v 3.6, but it didn’t work. I tried it in IE 8 and it worked fine. A little irritating, but at least now I have a workaround. Thanks everyone!
It works fine with IE, but not Firefox.
If you need scrolling feature, just capture the webpage on IE.
Chrome also has this problem.
Scrolling Window capture is the reason I plunked down the money for SnagIt — and I hope they jump on this quickly.
FYI – from a long-time SnagIt user – I am having the same problem on Firefox 3.6 (Windows 7 64 bit) – scrolling capture does not work. Bummer
The same problem with me on firefox but it works with IE
I wish you fix the firefox problem
Thank u
Hi,
This solution did fix the problem for IE8, but it didn’t fix it for Firefox 3.6 nor Google Chrome browsers. I’m using Snagit 9.1.3. I purchased this upgrade AFTER these browsers were released.
Do you have any intention of looking into that and updating? that is one of my favorite Snagit features. You have to keep this tool updated along with browsers. it’s a bad idea to ask people to downgrade or not upgrade their browser, instead.
I love snagit, but I won’t update again unless this problem is fixed, and it makes me stop using as of now for most of the things I need to do screen captures on.

this workaround not working with version 9.1.3 !
btw could you make full webpage capture with scrolling but without capturing scrollbars?
TY
I just tested this in both IE 8 and FireFox 3.6 and it does not work in Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit. I agree with the comments that an update needs to be made available as soon as possible
Thanks,
Brian
Edit – there is a hotfix available and I should have looked for it before echoing other comments made above.
I have tested it with both Firefox 3.6 and IE 8 and it works on both…

i follow every step but It still not work
I have XP Pro, Mozilla 3.6.3 and Snagit 9.1.3
The hotfix didn’t work for me until I followed the steps OP mentioned!
Thank you very much!
Does their new version work ok? if so can we get a free upgrade? I literally cannot use this tool anymore and definitely no plans to buy the upgrade because of it.
The hotfix works for FireFox scrolling. Thanks
Thanks for the tips. It still doesn’t work every time but seems the most flaky with Firefox. I’ll keep experimenting.
I have windows 7 64 bit and installed recently Snagit 10 replacing version 9. On explorer and firefox autoscroll function does nor work properly. Only part of the window is captured.

this is the problem in new version.
so before launching such a reputed program why dont u see that all the functions r working in most of the common set up?
irony is that same function was working in earlier ver perfatly – why such a down grade – with no solution so far ??????
The hotfix above (April 29th by Brina) fixed it beautifully! Make sure both Firefox and snag it are shut down.
I am running Windows 7 Pro and have SnagIt 9.3.1. I am using both Firefox 3.6.8 and IE8.
I updated the Auto Scroll properties as described in the walk-through and that took care of the scrolling issue with IE8. So, thank you for that.
I also installed the hotfix for Firefox but it doesn’t work. The page appears to scroll during the capture process, but the screen cap image still cuts off at the bottom of the first screen. However, unlike before the fix, the very bottom of the Web page is captured and appended it to the first half, so it looks like the middle of the page is missing. I guess it’s a step in the right direction, but it looks like the fix still needs work.
The scrolling screen capture feature unfortunately does not work in Windows 7 in SnagIT v10. It is working in SnagIT v 9.1.2
Applied the hotfix and still can’t get snagit version 9.1.3 Build 19) to play nicely with Firefox 3.6.10 – it does work with IE 7. I am used to not using Internet Explorer after having to suffer through IE 6.0 and really am not happy that my beloved firefox is being toyed with.
hi 2 all
I’m using Windows XP Pro
+ , , and and still dosn’t work with Auto Scroll Window feature. i try this hotfix with Sbagit 8.0 too and it doesn’t work.
PLeaSE help m3
Thanks
Yes, it also happened to me.
I am using windows 7 and firefox 3.6.10, The Snagit cannot scrolling.
thanks Brian Hankey for the link.
Here’s the step to fix the problem:
Make sure you have snagit 9.1.3 or upgrade it from
http://www.softwarecasa.com/snagit-upgrade.html
Install it.
Download scrollfix.zip
http://techsmith.custhelp.com/ci/fattach/get/85932/
Make sure to close your firefox and snagit.
then you can Install SnagitHotfix.msi
Restart your PC.
Thanks Tom! I would suggest instead to upgrade to Snagit version 10 here:
http://www.softwarecasa.com/snagit-upgrade.html
Somebody please tell Tech Smith that this problem is mostly with Firefox. I’ve seen their “knowledgebase” section it makes references to “some” pages have scrolling issues.
My Snagit 8 Used to work on Firefox, and then it stopped, but after reading some comments here, it seems to work just fine with IE.
So, its not so much the Snagit thats a problem, but the newer versions of Firefox.
I purchased Snagit 10 and after upgrading Firefox the scrolling stopped working for me as well (doesn’t work consistently in IE but who cares). The solution for me was to roll back to Firefox 3.5. Now it works perfectly! Snagit is an awesome piece of software and as far as I know it’s the only software, PERIOD, that can capture scrolling windows of the size and complexity that I need to capture. So, if the scrolling’s not working for you, try Firefox 3.5 … it worked for me
Hi Robert,
TechSmith has released a minor upgrade, Snagit 10.01 that should take care of this problem on Firefox 4 as well.
Totally agree with you about the awesomeness of Snagit
Thanks for giving me a place to start on this very frustrating problem. I am using Chrome – thought that might be the problem. I changed the Scroll Delay to 100 milliseconds…that did the trick for me.
Jayn, great tip for chrome users, thanks!
Snagit 10.0.1, Firefox 5.0, Windows Vista Pro SP2 64-bit. And even after trying the various delay settings etc it still won’t perform a scrolling capture — I just get the simple screen-shot, come what may.
Hi John,
Do you see the yellow arrow? Also please note that the lowest part of the window you want to scroll-capture must be visible. If not visible, the yellow arrow will not appear.
I tried to change the settings as recommended by changing “vertical” to “both” and it is not working !!! I am using os win 7 and firefox 5. I probably have to change to IE9
Win 7 + Firefox 5 — I’ve tried every solution presented here and on other sites. I see the down and side arrows but I am not able to scroll whether from the top or bottom of a webpage. It does work in IE9, so I either have to switch back to IE or forget scrolling. Scrolling is why I bought SnagIt in the first place. *** post edited, removed irrelevant ad.
v 10.0.1 both IE and Firefox on a Win XP Pro
Scrolling has stopped working. There are no arrows, just the cross hairs so now I can only capture the visible region. A real pity
Double-check that you have 10.01.58 installed. I had the same problem with 10.0, but once updated to latest release i can scroll again with latest firefox.
Thanks Peter.
Yes, I have build 58 (Mar 21).
It had been working fine previously, even with Firefox but now doesn’t work with either FF or IE.
Interesting update though is that I just installed Chrome on this PC and it works fine. That’s something at least!
