To help with poor sound volume in Vista, go to:
1. Control Panel
2. Hardware & Sound
3. Sound
4. Recording Tab
5. Stereo Mix - Properties
6. Advanced Tab

Under Exclusive Mode, uncheck the checkbox for "Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device". Now go to the Levels tab and the stereo mix can be raised and the setting will be retained. Otherwise, that setting is reset by Snagit. Hope this helps.

Snagit 9 mutes my microphone array each time I start an audio/video capture.
This is very frustrating!
I go back into audio recording properties, and the mic array is muted. I unmute it, then I have my mic back...and am able to record using the Windows Sound Recorder.
Also, in Vista, there is no stereo mix at all...even when I try the steps "Tyler" suggested...stereo mix is not present, ever.
The bottom line: Snagit 9 mutes the mic each time I click "Capture".

I tried recording and followed all the steps above, but the sound remains at a very low volume. I needed to turn up the volume 3/4ths of the way to hear a tiny squeak of the audio.

Hi Brian,

Are you able to record any sound with a regular microphone (outside snagit)?

Best,
Peter

Using a Dell Dimension desktop with a SigmaTel soundcard. Read the instructions above. Read all of the comments. Tried every conceivable combination. NOTHING works -- NOTHING.

Thus far my $50 investment in SnagIt is not proving worthwhile.

HOLY SMOKES! I FINALLY found the problem, the instructions are NOT specific enough, but they are close. Do this for XP:
1. Start, Settings, Control Panel.
2. Click SOUNDS-AND-AUDIO-DEVICES icon.
3. Click Audio Tab, then Sound Recording (middle part) click VOLUME.
4. (at the top) Click open the pull-down menu called OPTIONS, then click PROPERTIES.
5. Click the boxes: STEREO MIX, CD PLAYER, LINE IN. Un-click MICROPHONE and everything else.
The circular buttons above these boxes should be clicked RECORDING, playback un-clicked. Then click OK.
7. NOW! CHECK IT! Go back to #3 here, click on VOLUME again. A pop-up should come up with all your audio volume levels (stereo mix, cd player, line-in) MAKE SURE THE STEREO MIX BOX AT THE BOTTOM LEFT OF IT'S VOLUME SLIDE BAR IS CHECKED AND THE VOLUME IS UP ALL THE WAY!

For safety, unplug any microphones...
I have no idea how the audio got clicked off, or the volume reset or whatever, I never touched anything before.
